For many people out there on a budget, the inflatable swimming pool is a tried and tested Aussie symbol. But you may be stunned to find out that you may in fact be breaking the law in Queensland and throughout Australia.

In Queensland the legislation that deals with this is
AS1926.1 -2007 Swimming Pool Safety Part 1: Fencing for swimming pools, and
Queensland Development Code Mandatory Part 3.4— Swimming Pool Barriers

I would very strongly urge people to try and understand these documents if they have any worry with their Gold Coast pool fences or swimming pools– including blow up pools.
That is because while an inflatable pool may be cheaper, and short-term, it is still something that can lead to drowning risks for young children and animals and as such is caught within the Queensland pool fencing laws.
This means that you would have to have a permit to ‘install the pool’– yes that will even include inflating it in your backyard.
You would also need to position it in an area that is fully fenced and can not be accessed directly from the house. That means that a normal backyard would not be enough– instead, you need a devoted fenced area that your back door will not open into.

However, families have the ability to use inflatable wading pools without any authorisation provided the maximum height is under 30cm and the pool holds less than 2000L.
If you have an inflatable pool bigger than this then that means that your inflatable pool or short-term pool will need to have:
– A pool safety barrier that is at least 120cm from bottom to top
– Self-closing and also self-latching gates on the fence that can shut from any degree of openness, and
– There can be no climbable objects positioned within 90cm of the pool barrier.
